Blog Assignment #6

The Network Student

This video was cute, simple, and straight to the point. I enjoyed the way Mrs. Drexler explained how a network student should operate. This video was really close to me because its like my EDM 310 class. I believe the network student video actually shows what our future student will be like. I do believe the students will be in class everyday but the presence of technology will be too. Yes, I believe that students should know what is out their in the technology world. Students should also have an idea of how to use the computer properly. This is why teachers will still be needed. Teachers will have to help guide the students into the world of technology. In the network student, at the end of the video it still showed the student going back to the teacher to get understanding on building the network properly. Teachers will still be needed in the classroom for guidance. Thanks EDM 310, this class is definitely an eye opener for future teachers.

Seventh Grade PLE
This young lady that has shared her PLE with the world is very knowledgeable about technology. This seventh grader presentation was outstanding. She was very well spoken. This young lady really enjoys her PLE and it showed. I just hope that my PLN will be as good. Her PLE let me know that I need to work a little harder on mine. Wow, its good to see a student knowledgeable about technology.

Critiques of Smartboards
Why Smartboards are a dumb Initiative by Michael Staton
I understand Mr.Staton when he states that Smartboards are expensive. Yes, I believe in saving money but the Smartboard can also help bring the students into the 21st Century of technology. I think Smartboards can help the teacher and students stay up to date in technology. I also feel that once in demand Smartboards may be cheaper for schools to purchase. Yes, he makes some good points because the Smartboard want change ineffective teaching. The Smartboard can not replace the teacher. The teacher still have to manage her classroom. I have found a blog http://gettingsmarterwithsmartboards.blogspot.com that gives new and interesting information relating to the love of Smartboards in education This blog gives out helpful resources and other links.
Why I hate Interactive Whiteboards by Bill Ferriter
This article points out a lot of good points about the dislikes of the Interactive Whiteboard. I agree, that the Interactive Whiteboards does not allow independent discovery. In which. I believe that all students should be allowed to work independently. When the students work independently they feel more proud of their work. It motivates students when they can figure things out on their own. I also agree with Mr. Ferriter that the schools should check to see how effective the Interactive Whiteboards are. The Interactive Whiteboards can be helpful but just not the main focus of the classroom. The teacher will still have to guide the students and show them the right way of doing certain things. I also found a blog that shares information and activities that can be used for the Interactive Whiteboard. It is www.blogspottoplist.com/academics/blogdetails17907.html

The Benefits of Podcasting in the Classroom by Joe Dale

This video gave out good information about podcasting. It should how pocasting can be used in the classroom and how students can use it away from the classroom. Watching this video, reading information from Education Prodcast Network and the Podcast Collection by Judy Scharf all gave good reason on why teachers should incorporate podcasting in the classroom. I believe the use of podcasting can be very successful in school. Podcasting allows students to be creative with their work. It also allow students to tune in away from the classroom. Judy Scharf podcast collection really gave out some good tips on how to succeed with podcasting. She also shared a Rubric that students can used to help grade on how effective podcasting is to them. The tips from the readings and video from above really help my group with our podcast. This also was good information that can help me as a future teacher with incorporating technology in the class room.

Don't Teach Your Kids This Stuff. Please? by Scott McLeod

Mr. McLeod has some good points in his article. Yes, I believe that technology should be used to help educate our students. I do agree that there are a lot of strange things in the world of technology so, I believe that it should be an age limit for certain web sites. I feel that facebook, twitter, myspace, and other sites similar to these should have an age limit. I believe that parents should monitor what their children view on the computer and control the settings for viewing certain sites. This is why its important for teachers and parents to make sure students know how to properly use the computer. I definitely agree with Mr. McLeod that their are some danger with this technology. Scott McLeod,J.D. Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Educational Administration program at Iowa State University. He is widely recognized as one of the nation's leading academic experts on K-12 school technology leadership issues.
The iSchool Initiative
The iSchool is a program that a 17 year old student(Travis Allen)created. He talks about how the school system is suffering with budget cuts, teacher lay off, and large classrooms. Travis has put together a presentation where he came up with the iSchool program. He feels that this app could be the answer to help transform America's Schools. Travis believes that iSchool will save money because their are no books, no paper, no copier machine, and no pencils being used. Yes, the iSchool sounds like it can be very helpful on saving the schools money. This idea may even work but it still cannot replace teachers. It sounds like a great way to incorporate technology in the classroom. The apps appear to be well thought out and easy to access. The ischool can be great but students still need to know how to read and write . The iSchool cannot be a replacement for school. If something happens to the ischool what will the students do?
Lost Generation
This video was very inspiring. At first, it made you think how the world believes that the next generation is lost. Then it should at the end how situations can be reversed from negative to positive. This up and coming generation do not have to be the lost generation. There is hope and they all can strive for a brighter future.
Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir
This video was amazing to see how 185 people formed a choir that has never met was just beautiful. The world of technology is definitely powerful. It was wonderful to see that people could come together from all over the world to form a choir with such a beautiful sound. It was just speechless.
Teaching in the 21st Century
Teaching in the 21st Century means that teachers will be filter for students. There are just some things that technology cannot do. Teachers still have to help the students learn and understand what they are reading. Technology is the future but it still is not enough to help educate students. It cannot help with everyday life situations. Technology cannot not help teach students good morals and how to walk in both worlds of everyday life.

A Vision Of Students Today

This video shared a lot of information about how the college experience is today. The cost of attending school and purchasing very expensive books that are never used really hit home for me. I have also seen students who facebook and twitter while in class. This really sends a message that the classroom needs to become more interesting. I believe the classroom experience needs to be more exciting. I feel that incorporating technology in the classroom will help maintain the students interest because its bring their world into the class as well. Overall, I believed this video captured the students college experience very well. I would not add anything to this video. It was simple and straight to the point.
It's Not about Technology by Kelley Hines
I really enjoyed reading Kelly Hines blog. I agree, that technology should not be the center of learning and the school system must recognize the need to change the approach to teaching. I know that incorporating technology in the classroom is important but it should not be the whole experience. Technology can be very helpful but teachers still have to teach the students. The students will still need to know how to cope in today's society and technology cannot teach that. This article reminded me that I will need to be able to walk in both worlds. I agree, that teachers need to be constant learners. Teachers set the tone for their class. I plan on incorporating technology in the classroom but it will not be the center of my classroom. I will also check my teaching style if my students are not doing well and change it. I believe that we must allow the students to show their creativity in the classrooms.
Karl Fisch: Is it Okay to Be A Technologically illiterate Teacher?
This article was very interesting. I believe that teachers should be open to technology. I think teachers (old and new) should be willing to learn how to use technology. I know to some of the older teachers it may be harder for them to incorporate technology in the classsroom but they should at least try it. It does not have to be the center of the classroom but teachers should have an idea of what is being used. The knowledge on technology will help prepare students for the future. Technology cannot replace the teacher but it can help the student.
Gary Hayes Social Media Count
Mr. Hayes social media count was very impressive. This social media count shows how many people are using their computers on different sites. I believe as a future teacher that technology will have to incorporated. The use of the computer is huge now, so I can only imagine how it will be in the years to come.

Summary Post C4T#1

I was assigned to The p.e.geek. The p.e.geek posted oh his blog an app that can be used on the iPhone. The iPhone application is called the Instant Heart Rate. The instant heart rate app is supposed to give the most accurate heart rate. This app for iPhone does not need any external hardware. To make it work place your finger over the iPhone camera and hold for 10 seconds. This app will track through the finger and give an appropriate BPM. I believed that this will be a good app especially if one works out and want to make sure they are getting good cardio. His next post was about 100+ Ways to Use Technology in Physical Education. He gives simple ways to incorporate technology into the classroom. I believed that it will be a great book and handy for teachers to use. I thanked him for sharing how to incorporate technology in Physical Education. There have been no responses to my comments that were left.

Blog Assignment 2

Did You Know
The video Did You Know by Karl Fisch and Scott McLeod was very different. It was amazing to see how technology has changed. I do believe that China is far more advance in technology than the United States. The United States is trying to compete in the world of technology but it definitely has some catching up to do. This video showed how technology is constantly changing and how it will continue to change. Technology is in high demand in all areas of life. It is used in our every day lives. Technology has definitely changed our lives, especially with the use of cell phones. I remember a time when cell phones were not in demand like they are now. People were able to leave home without a cell phone but now that has changed. People cannot imagine leaving home without their cell phone. This just show how much we are relying on technology now in our every day lives.
Mr. Winkles Wakes
The video Mr. Winkles Wakes by Mathew Needleman was cute. It was about a man that had fallen a sleep and finally woke up 100 years later. In that time it showed that when he went into the city and some of the old places that he remember things were different. It showed how technology has taken over the world. It showed that technology was being used in the business and hospital industry. All over the streets and neighbors. Technology was taken over all the places that was familiar to him except for one. Mr Winkle decided to go see if the classroom was still the same and it was. This is very sad that after a man has slept for a 100 years that nothing has changed with the education system. This goes to show their is a need for technology to be incorporated in the classroom. We need technology in the classroom because this is the only way the students are going to make it in the real world.
Sir Ken Robinson
The video of Sir Ken Robinson: The importance of creativity was funny and informative. I do believe as well that creativity has been lost in the schools. I believe when music and art is taken out or away from the student they lose excitement about creativity. I think that electives help students become creative. Math, Science, Language Arts, and Reading are all important essentials that students need. Students need these essentials but they also need creativity as well. The students need an outlet were they can relax and do something fun. In this day and time the only thing that is important now is testing students. I believe that if the schools embrace activities that allow for students to be creative, they may see better results. In this video Ken Robinson stated that we need a balance of Science and the Arts in the school system. He also stated the schools and the community need to get together and I agree.
The Interview
The video of Cecelia Gault interviewing Sir Ken Robinson was good. The scholastic article was very interesting. I also was surprised at the low drop out rate. The students in Finland only attend school four days out of the week. It seems as though the less pressure that is placed on students the better the results are. I do believe that all kids are creative and can learn. I will definitely incorporate technology in the classroom. The use and knowledge of technology will take students very far. The interview that Cecelia had with Sir Ken Robinson was very good. She asked good questions in her interview and she spoke very well. It seems as though Cecelia has had the chance to be creative because she did a good job.
The video Harness your students digital smart was great. I love the way the teacher bought technology in the classroom. This teacher is allowing the students to be creative and being introduce to technology at the same time. The most important statement the teacher made was, "you do not have to know it all." A teacher does not have to know everything about technology to bring it into the classroom. Technology in the classroom will give students a chance to be creative. Technology in the classroom gives the students an opportunity to learn and teach what they have learned. This video was very encouraging. It definitely shows that teachers should embrace technology.
